Borneo Sucker Loach

Known as Borneo Suckers or Hong Kong plecos. These fish come from the rapid-moving streams of Asia, and their streamlined bodies are built to withstand those strong currents. Specifically, these loaches were named for the island of Borneo, which is located in Malaysia. Due to their hydrodynamic shape and the conditions of their natural habitat makes it clear that these fish prefer a fast-moving, oxygen-rich environment like the streams they came from, and these conditions can be replicated in your aquarium by installing powerheads.

Borneo Sucker Loach

  • Origin: Cobitidae  Originating from Southeast Asia, the coolie loach is indigenous to the streams of Borneo, Java, western Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra, and Thailand.

Pangio kuhlii is one of two dozen species of kuhlis, a number of which closely resemble each other.

  • Care Level: Easy to Moderate  They will tolerate a range of water parameters but prefer water on the acidic side with slightly colder temperatures in the mid-70s Fahrenheit.

The smooth substrate is a must as these obligate burrowers will be injured by substrates having rough edges, sand is the preferred substrate for these fish.

Rocks, driftwood, and caves are all the best decor for coolie loaches.

Keep lighting subdued, however, a well-lit tank is suitable as long as it is heavily planted, thus offering shady places for the loaches to hide.

  • Size: 1.5-1.6 Inches  This tiny size makes it easy for them to find little crevices to hide in and access food that other fish can’t.

  • Life Span: 10 Years  The expected lifespan, if housed correctly.
